The Redfish Hole is a walk-in fishing area in Crystal River Preserve State Park, off Fort Island Trail west of Crystal River. From the entrance on the south side of the road near mile marker 4, a gravel trail leads about half a mile to an old borrow pit that is tidally influenced, and the park calls it a good winter spot for redfish, spotted seatrout, snook and flounder. Live shrimp on a light jighead or under a cork and small soft plastics work well, and cut bait on the bottom takes the bigger redfish and black drum. Fish a moving tide, especially in winter after a cold front, when fish look for deeper water. There are no restrooms or drinking water. The park is open 8 a.m. to sunset with no fee. Watch for heat, insects and summer lightning on the walk out.
