Avenida 10 Beach Access, Pensacola Beach Fishing

Avenida 10 Beach Access is one of the numbered street-end walkovers along Ariola Drive on Pensacola Beach. It gives you open Gulf surf a short stroll from the beach's busiest stretch, without the fees and the crowd.

The access is at the end of Avenida 10, where it meets Ariola Drive, on Pensacola Beach in Escambia County. The Santa Rosa Island Authority and Escambia County handle the beach accesses.

The surf here follows the Panhandle calendar.

• Spring (Mar-May): pompano and whiting arrive in the trough as the Gulf warms
• Summer (Jun-Aug): whiting, Spanish mackerel near bait, and sharks and rays in warm water
• Fall (Sep-Nov): the best pompano stretch, with redfish and drum along the bars
• Winter (Dec-Feb): slower fishing; whiting and the odd redfish or drum on mild days

Keep it simple and light enough to cast a long way.

• Pompano and whiting: a two-hook rig with a pyramid sinker, fresh shrimp or sand fleas
• Redfish: cut mullet or a whole shrimp on a fish-finder rig
• Spanish mackerel: a small spoon or jig cast beyond the bar
• A 9 to 12 foot surf rod with a sand spike keeps your gear out of the wash
• Buy bait in town before you arrive; the access has no shop

Here the tide is one small high and low most days, so wind and wave action matter more.

• Clean green water with a light onshore breeze is ideal
• A big southerly swell fills the troughs with weed
• Falling tide drags bait out of the troughs and can slow the bite
• Fronts in fall and winter can switch on the redfish

Pensacola Beach has strong rip currents when the flags are flying.

• Stay out of lifeguarded swim areas and away from swimmers
• Shuffle your feet for stingrays
• Leave the sand at the first thunder of a summer storm

There is little here beyond the walkover.

• Come early on summer weekends; the few spaces fill quickly
• Walk a few hundred yards along the beach to find a gap between swimmers
• Fresh sand fleas beat frozen shrimp for pompano when you can get them
• Check the surf report; calm, clear days are best
• Carry out your line and bait packaging
• Casino Beach and the Gulf Pier are the fallback if the lot is full

The Santa Rosa Island Authority and Escambia County manage Pensacola Beach; neither lists fishing at this access that we found, so read the posted signs before you set up.
