Avenida 16 Beach Access, Pensacola Beach Fishing

Avenida 16 Beach Access is one of the numbered public walkovers that cut through the dunes of Pensacola Beach to the Gulf. It has no pier or structure, only sand, a trough and the surf, which suits anglers who like to travel light and fish quietly.

• Open Gulf surf on Santa Rosa Island, east of the Casino Beach pier area
• Pompano and whiting are the main draws, with redfish and mackerel in season
• A dune walkover and a nearby parking area
• Far less crowded than the beach by the pier

The access sits on the Gulf side of Pensacola Beach, at Avenida 16 near Ariola Drive. The beach is managed by Escambia County through the Santa Rosa Island Authority area.

• The walk from the car to the water is short, over boardwalk then soft sand
• Carry rods, a bucket and a cart if you can; the sand is loose

Surf fish follow the seasons here.

• Spring (Mar-May): pompano arrive in the first trough, with whiting and bluefish
• Summer (Jun-Aug): whiting and the odd pompano early in the day; ladyfish and jacks chase bait; stingrays in the shallows
• Fall (Sep-Nov): the best run for pompano, plus redfish along the bars and Spanish mackerel when bait is close
• Winter (Dec-Feb): slower; whiting and a few pompano on warm spells, with bluefish on cold, clear days

Keep it simple and light.

• A 9 to 11 foot surf rod with 15 to 20 lb line handles most fish here
• A two-hook pompano rig with a small sinker, baited with sand fleas, fresh shrimp or small pieces of Fishbites
• Cast just beyond the breaking waves into the first or second trough
• Whiting take the same rigs, and bits of squid or shrimp work when sand fleas are scarce
• Redfish and mackerel: a Gotcha plug or a spoon retrieved quickly across the bars
• Bring or buy bait in advance, or rake sand fleas from the swash line

Escambia County has one small high and one small low on most days, so the tide swings are gentle and slow.

• Moving water, either direction, for the first two hours
• Clear green water and a small, kicking surf is the sweet spot; flat water slows the bite
• After a south or southwest blow the water can turn milky for a day or two
• Early morning and late evening beat midday in summer
• Look for the darker, deeper trough just off the sand before you cast

This is an open Gulf beach, not a sheltered park.

• Check the flag colors; no wading or swimming under double red flags
• Rip currents run along the bars; do not wade out to cast
• Stingrays rest in the shallows, so shuffle your feet
• Leave the beach at the first thunder in summer storms
• Hooks and lines are a risk to swimmers on busy days; cast away from them
• Access: a dune walkover and a short walk on soft sand; loose sand is hard on carts and wheelchairs beyond the boardwalk

Facilities here are minimal.

• A small parking area near the access
• No restrooms, showers or bait shop confirmed at this walkover
• The island's bigger beach areas, such as Casino Beach, have restrooms and food, a short drive west
• Bring water, sun protection and a rod holder or sand spike

• Take a sand-flea rake and a cheap bucket and gather bait on the swash line at dawn
• Pompano move in schools, so if you get one, stay put
• Watch for crowds on holiday weekends and during events; walk away from the access for more room
• Scout the trough at low tide so you know where to cast on the rising water
• Use a longer leader in clear water
• Pack out all line and trash

Pensacola Beach is managed by Escambia County and the Santa Rosa Island Authority area.
