Naval Live Oaks Area Fishing

6.3· Beach · Gulf Breeze, FL

Free: Not one of the seashore's fee entrance areas (checked Sep 27, 2026)

The Naval Live Oaks Area is Gulf Islands National Seashore's wooded unit on the Gulf Breeze peninsula, where US 98 runs through a live oak forest between Santa Rosa Sound and Pensacola Bay. The park itself points anglers to the trails that lead down to the sound shore near the picnic area, a calm, grassy stretch of water for speckled trout, redfish and flounder, with Spanish mackerel, ladyfish and bluefish chasing bait in the warm months and pompano on the sand in spring and fall. Wade the sandy shallows or cast from the beach with live shrimp under a cork or small jigs on a moving tide. The south-side gate is open 8 a.m. to sunset, the area is not one of the seashore's fee areas, and restrooms are by the picnic area. Watch for lightning, stingrays and the fragile seagrass underfoot.
