Avenida 22 is a street-end walkover on the quiet east side of Pensacola Beach, off Ariola Drive, where the island grows narrow and the crowds thin out. It has a few parking spaces and nothing else, which is why surf anglers use it: you can walk a long way along open sand without meeting anyone. Fishing here is the standard Panhandle surf game, with pompano and whiting in the first trough from spring into fall, redfish and drum on the bars in cooler weather, and Spanish mackerel when bait comes close in summer. Fresh shrimp and sand fleas on bottom rigs take most fish. The managing bodies list no fishing rule for this access that we found, so read the signs and mind the rip currents.
