Pensacola Beach Access 27A Fishing

Pensacola Beach Access 27A is the dune walkover the tourism office lists just east of the island's main residential streets, reached from a public lot on Via de Luna. It puts surf anglers on Pensacola Beach well away from the guarded swimming beaches at Casino Beach and Park East.

• A paved lot on the Gulf side of Via de Luna, so no road to cross with a cart
• A boardwalk over the dunes that ends in a ramp onto the sand
• Pompano and Gulf whiting in spring and fall, redfish and flounder in autumn
• Bluefish schools and summer Spanish mackerel for lure anglers
• No lifeguard station at this walkover

The access is on Via de Luna Drive (Highway 399) in Pensacola Beach, east of Calle Hermosa and west of Portofino Island Resort.

• Getting there: cross the Bob Sikes toll bridge from Gulf Breeze to the Casino Beach area, then head east on Via de Luna for a little over three miles
• Parking: a paved public lot beside the walkover, on the Gulf side of the road
• The walk: a wooden boardwalk crosses the dunes and switches back into a ramp at the beach end; then soft sand to the water
• No fee or hours are posted for this lot in the tourism listing, so follow any signs on site
• Reach the Gulf by the boardwalk or marked footpaths; the dunes and sea oats themselves are off limits

The eastern end of Pensacola Beach has the same surf fish as the rest of Santa Rosa Island, and fall is often the best season.

• Spring (Mar-May): pompano run the troughs, Gulf whiting bite well, and the first Spanish mackerel arrive with the bait
• Summer (Jun-Aug): Spanish mackerel, ladyfish and bluefish on bait schools early in the day; small sharks and catfish on cut bait
• Fall (Sep-Nov): the island's fall fishing peaks, with big redfish moving through, bluefish schooling along the beach and flounder feeding close to shore
• Winter (Dec-Feb): Gulf whiting and black drum on shrimp between cold fronts

Set bait rods in the trough and keep a lure rod handy for schools passing along the beach.

• A 10- to 12-foot surf rod, 17- to 20-lb line, a double-drop rig with size 1 or 2 hooks and a pyramid sinker of 2 to 4 oz
• Baits: sand fleas, fresh or frozen shrimp and cut mullet; fleas are easy to dig at the water's edge
• For bluefish and mackerel: a 1/2- to 1-oz spoon on a short wire or heavy mono leader, cast past the breakers
• For redfish: a fish-finder rig with a 4/0 or 5/0 circle hook and a mullet chunk, fished in the evening
• For flounder in fall: a live finger mullet or minnow worked slowly across the bottom near shore

Pensacola Beach has a gentle Gulf tide. NOAA's Pensacola Beach Pier station predicts one high and one low on most days, up to about 2 feet apart.

• Surf and light matter more than tide height; fish early morning and the last hours of daylight
• A light onshore breeze and a small, clean surf are ideal for pompano
• Cooling water in October and November brings the best mix of redfish, bluefish and pompano
• A strong south wind builds a heavy, sandy surf; wait for it to settle
• Watch for birds diving over bait; bluefish and mackerel are usually under them

There is no lifeguard at Access 27A; the Santa Rosa Island Authority posts lifeguards at Casino Beach, Park East, the Fort Pickens gate park and Quietwater Beach.

• Obey the beach flags: no swimming or wading on red or double red flags
• In an emergency call 911 and give the walkover number, 27A, so responders can find you
• Rip currents can form even on calm days; never wade deep to cast
• Lightning is common on summer afternoons; leave the beach when storms approach
• Shuffle your feet to avoid stingrays
• The boardwalk ramp makes the dune crossing easier, but the beach beyond it is soft sand

Access 27A is a simple beach access with parking and a toilet.

• A paved public parking lot on Via de Luna
• An ADA-compliant portable toilet at the site
• A dune walkover with a ramp at the beach end
• No showers, drinking water or food are listed for the access
• Shops, restaurants and the Gulf Pier are in the central part of Pensacola Beach, a few miles west

• Note the walkover number before you walk down; the island's emergency advice is to know the nearest one
• Bring a cart with wide wheels: the ramp helps, but the sand beyond is deep and soft
• In fall, keep a heavier rod with cut mullet out for a passing bull redfish while you fish for pompano
• Carry everything off the beach at the end of the day; nothing may be left overnight
• If the lot is full, other public lots with walkovers line Via de Luna east toward Portofino and Park East
• Grills and open flames are not allowed on the beach here; the only grilling is at Park West

Pensacola Beach is managed by the Santa Rosa Island Authority on Escambia County land, and island and county rules apply.

• No glass containers on the beach, and no open flames or grills
• No dogs on the beach except in the island's two designated dog parks
• County lifeguards may order anglers to stop fishing, including shark fishing, too close to bathers
• Stay off the dunes and sea oats, and remove all gear and trash at the end of the day
• A Florida saltwater fishing license is required unless you are exempt; shore-based shark fishing needs the free FWC permit
