Johnson Beach, Perdido Key Fishing

6.9· Beach · Escambia County, FL

Fee to fish: National park entrance fee, valid one to seven days (checked Sep 27, 2026)

Johnson Beach is the Perdido Key Area of Gulf Islands National Seashore: miles of undeveloped white sand with the open Gulf on one side and Big Lagoon on the other. It is a first-class surf fishing beach for pompano, Gulf whiting and redfish, with Spanish mackerel and bluefish along the bars in spring and fall and speckled trout on the lagoon shore. Fish the troughs between the bars on a moving tide with sand fleas, shrimp or pompano jigs. A park entrance fee is charged, the road runs about 1.5 miles to a turnaround, and beyond that it is on foot only. Fishing is not allowed within the flagged swim beach while lifeguards are on duty, so walk east, and bring your bait: digging for it is not allowed in the park. Watch for rip currents, lightning and stingrays.
