Pensacola Beach Park West Fishing

Pensacola Beach Park West straddles Santa Rosa Island at the western end of Pensacola Beach, with a sound-side beach and a Gulf-side beach a short walk apart across Fort Pickens Road. Anglers get calm inshore water on one side and open surf on the other, with good facilities and plenty of parking.

• Sound side: speckled trout, redfish and flounder over sand and grass in Santa Rosa Sound
• Gulf side: pompano, Gulf whiting and Spanish mackerel in the surf in season
• Parking for more than 150 cars, pavilions and a playground on the sound side, with restrooms and showers across the road
• Shared with snorkelers, kayakers and swimmers, so pick your spot with care

Park West is on Fort Pickens Road at the western end of Pensacola Beach, on the right just before the entrance gate to the Fort Pickens Area of the National Seashore.

• Getting there: cross the Bob Sikes toll bridge onto Pensacola Beach, turn right onto Fort Pickens Road and continue west
• Parking: more than 150 spaces on the sound side, with a large open sandy beach beyond
• The sound-side kayak access is listed as daytime use only, with no fee
• The Gulf-side beach is across Fort Pickens Road, with restrooms and showers on that side
• Both beaches are soft sand; a cart with wide wheels helps with gear

The two sides fish differently: grass and sand flats on the sound, open surf on the Gulf.

• Spring (Mar-May): sheepshead around structure early, then speckled trout and redfish on the sound flats; pompano and Spanish mackerel arrive on the Gulf side
• Summer (Jun-Aug): trout at first light on the sound, ladyfish and Spanish mackerel chasing bait, whiting in the Gulf troughs
• Fall (Sep-Nov): the best season, with redfish and flounder on the sound side and pompano and bull redfish in the surf
• Winter (Dec-Feb): slower; redfish and trout on warm afternoons in the sound and Gulf whiting in the surf

Bring a light inshore rod for the sound and a longer surf rod if you plan to cross to the Gulf.

• Speckled trout: live shrimp under a popping cork, or a soft plastic on a 1/4 oz jighead worked over grass edges
• Redfish: live shrimp or cut mullet on a light Carolina rig along drop-offs and grass lines
• Flounder: a live mud minnow or finger mullet dragged slowly on a Carolina rig in fall
• Gulf side: a double-drop pompano rig with sand fleas or shrimp in the first trough, and silver spoons for Spanish mackerel
• Wade quietly on the sound flats and shuffle your feet
• Keep lures and lines well clear of the snorkel reef and anyone in the water

Tides here are small, often only one high and one low a day, but the current still runs along Santa Rosa Sound with each tide.

• Moving water on either tide fishes better than slack on the sound flats
• Early morning is best in summer, before boats, paddlers and swimmers arrive
• The sound beach faces north, so a light southerly breeze blows off the island and leaves the water in front of the park calm, while a north wind chops it up
• On the Gulf side, a light surf and clean green water suit pompano and whiting; a north wind flattens the surf there
• Clear water helps you spot grass edges and cruising redfish on the sound flats

This is a busy, family-friendly park, so the main hazards are other people and the weather.

• Snorkelers use the reef just off the sound beach; stay far from them and from any dive flags
• Lifeguards cover the Gulf-side beach in season; do not fish near swimmers
• Summer thunderstorms build quickly; leave the beach at the first thunder or lightning
• Rip currents are a risk on the Gulf side; obey the beach warning flags
• Shuffle your feet when wading to avoid stingrays
• The Gulf side is listed with easy beach access for visitors with disabilities

Park West is one of the better-equipped beach parks on the island.

• Sound side: parking for more than 150 cars, two covered pavilions with picnic tables, and a playground
• Gulf side: covered pavilions with grills and picnic tables, restrooms and showers
• A kayak access on the sound side
• A leashed-dog beach on part of the Gulf side, one of the island's two
• No bait or tackle is listed at the park; bring bait with you

• Fish the sound at first light, before the snorkelers, paddlers and swimmers arrive
• If the Gulf is rough, the sound side is often fishable, and the reverse on a calm, clear Gulf day
• Grills are allowed at Park West's facilities, but not on the open sand
• Lifeguards staff the Gulf side from about 9:30 a.m. to early evening in season, so early and late sessions leave the most room
• Park on the sound side and walk across the road to try the surf
• The Fort Pickens Area gate is just beyond the park if you want to fish its beaches too

Park West is run by the Santa Rosa Island Authority, and Escambia County's beach rules apply.

• Lifeguards can order anglers to stop fishing, including shark fishing, too close to swimmers
• No glass on the beach, and no open flames or grills except at Park West's grilling facilities
• Dogs only in the island's designated dog beaches; stay off the dunes and sea oats
• A Florida saltwater fishing license is required unless you are exempt
• Shore-based shark fishing requires the free FWC shore-based shark fishing permit
