St. George Island State Park Pavilion 1 Fishing

7.0· Beach· Franklin County, FL

Pavilion 1 is the first of the picnic and beach-use areas inside Dr. Julian G. Bruce St. George Island State Park, on the long undeveloped Gulf shoreline of the Franklin County barrier island. Anglers walk out from the pavilion parking and wade or cast into the first trough and bar. Whiting are the steady surf catch, and the spring and fall runs of Spanish mackerel and pompano along this stretch have a following among local anglers; redfish and seatrout work the edges of the bars, and bonnethead and blacktip sharks cruise through in summer. Fresh shrimp on a light rig is the staple bait. Falling tide and an early start bring the best bite, with calm mornings giving clearer water. The park is open 8 a.m. to sundown and charges a per-vehicle entrance fee. Rip currents, sun and summer lightning are the hazards.
