Bayport Park Fishing

6.7· Pier · Hernando County, FL

Bayport Park is a Hernando County park at the far west end of State Road 50, where the Weeki Wachee River meets the Gulf, with a fishing pier, a new boardwalk and two boat ramps. The pier reaches the edge of shallow grass flats and a channel, so it fishes well for spotted seatrout and redfish in fall and spring, sheepshead around the pilings in winter and snook and mangrove snapper in the warm months. A live shrimp under a popping cork or on a jighead covers most of it. Fish a moving tide, ideally the first of the incoming, because the flats drain very shallow at low water. The renovated park has restrooms and pavilions, parking costs $10 a day through ParkMobile, and county parks close at sunset. Watch for summer lightning, boat traffic at the ramps and the slick, weedy shoreline.
