Merry Pier Fishing

6.7· Pier · Tierra Verde, FL

Merry Pier is St. Pete Beach's historic bay-side pier at the east end of 8th Avenue in Pass-a-Grille, reaching out over the Boca Ciega Bay side of the village. The tide moves through this channel, so the pilings hold sheepshead and black drum in the cooler months and mangrove snapper through summer, while snook, redfish and spotted seatrout work the edges and Spanish mackerel pass in spring and fall. Tides are small and mixed, two uneven highs and lows most days, but the channel gives them real current, so fish the end of each run and the turn. The pier's bait shack was badly damaged by the 2024 hurricanes and stays closed until the city rebuilds it, so bring your own bait and expect construction once work starts. The Shell Key Shuttle runs from beside the pier, so keep lines clear of the boats.
