Pinecraft Park, Sarasota Fishing

Pinecraft Park is a neighborhood park on Phillippi Creek where a small fishing pier gives easy access to tidal, brackish water well inland of the bay. It is a modest, low-key spot best treated as a local light-tackle option.

The park sits at Gilbert Avenue in Sarasota, on Phillippi Creek, and is run by Sarasota County.

• Parking: the park has a lot; whether it charges a fee is not confirmed
• The walk: a short walk from the lot to the creek bank and pier
• Boat ramp: a shallow-draft ramp for small boats, and a canoe and kayak launch for the Phillippi Creek paddling trail
• Hours: not confirmed, so check the posted signs
• The county's other creek pier, at Phillippi Estate Park, is closed for dredging and is a different spot

Phillippi Creek is tidal and brackish, so rainfall changes what you catch from week to week.

• Spring (Mar-May): snook and seatrout work the creek as the water warms
• Summer (Jun-Aug): mangrove snapper and snook at first light and after dark, with jacks on the tide
• Fall (Sep-Nov): redfish and ladyfish follow bait, and mullet run the shoreline
• Winter (Dec-Feb): sheepshead and black drum near the structure, and snook stay in the warmest water they can find

A light spinning outfit with 10 lb line and a 20 lb leader is plenty for this narrow creek.

• Snook: live shrimp or a small pilchard, or a paddletail swimbait worked along the bank at dawn
• Redfish: cut mullet or crab on the bottom beside any cover
• Snapper: a tiny shrimp on a split shot and a small hook, kept near the pilings
• Sheepshead: fiddler crab or shrimp dropped straight down in winter
• Keep casts short and clear of the boat ramp lane

The creek follows the Gulf tides with two uneven highs and lows a day; check the NOAA station for Sarasota Bay.

• Moving water in either direction beats slack tide
• The falling tide pulls bait out of the upper creek and often lights up the bite
• Rain upstream stains the water and pushes the salt fish toward the bay
• Fish early or late in summer; the water gets warm and slow midday

Access is easy, but the creek is shared and the banks are natural.

• Look out for paddlers and small boats arriving at the ramp and launch
• Mind slick banks and uneven ground near the water
• Leave the pier when thunder is near
• Cover up against mosquitoes at dusk
• Do not wade the muddy bottom; stingrays and oysters hide there

• Respect the neighbors and keep the noise down in the evening

Pinecraft Park is managed by Sarasota County. The county's visitor page lists a fishing pier, but we did not find the county's own posted fishing rules for the park, so read the signs at the entrance.
