Hagens Cove is a small, remote Gulf-front park in the Tide Swamp Unit of the Big Bend Wildlife Management Area, between Keaton Beach and Steinhatchee in Taylor County. It looks over shallow, clear grass flats known for summer scalloping and for redfish and spotted seatrout that anglers wade to or cast to from the shore. Fish it on a rising or high tide: at low water the flats drain for hundreds of yards and the fish leave. Topwater plugs, gold spoons and live shrimp under a cork are the tools. A drive through pine flatwoods ends at a small unpaved ramp, picnic shelters and an observation tower; Hurricane Helene hit this coast hard in 2024, so check the FWC's notices before you go. Watch for stingrays, sharp oysters, heat and lightning.
