Steinhatchee River Fishing

6.3· Backwater · Taylor County, FL

The lower Steinhatchee River, on the Taylor County bank in the fishing village of Steinhatchee, is one of the Big Bend's great inshore rivers: a dark, spring-influenced tidal river that runs through marsh into Deadman Bay. Shore anglers fish the public waterfront around the county boat ramp on 1st Avenue South and the seawalls in town, working the channel edges for redfish, speckled trout and sheepshead, with black drum, flounder and mangrove snapper around docks and rocks. Fall and winter are special: trout pour into the river in October and November and hold in its deeper water through the cold. Moving water on either tide is best. Most of the riverbank at the mouth itself is private, so fish public land only. Watch for heavy boat traffic at the ramp.
