Fee to fish: Reached only by the passenger ferry from Gulfport, which charges a fare per person (checked Oct 17, 2026)
West Ship Island, home of Fort Massachusetts in the Gulf Islands National Seashore, is a barrier island about an hour by passenger ferry from Gulfport's Jones Park harbor, with boats from mid-March to early November, daily in summer and Wednesday to Sunday in spring and fall. Its beaches are open to fishing, though the ferry dock is closed to fishing and netting, and the swim beach is off limits while lifeguards are on duty. Redfish and speckled trout are the island's best-known catches, and cast netting for mullet is a favorite pastime; pompano, Spanish mackerel and ground mullet work the clearer surf on the Gulf side. Pack light: only backpacks, small coolers and bagged chairs ride the ferry, and the island has no trees or shade. Restrooms, showers, a snack bar and picnic pavilions sit by the boardwalk. Watch the heat, lightning, rip currents and stingrays, and do not miss the last ferry.
