Shepard State Park is a wooded, city-run park on the south side of Gautier, at 1034 Graveline Road, set among the tidal marshes of the lower Pascagoula River, which locals call the Singing River. Its small-craft boat launch, which a tourism listing describes with a fishing pier, and its marshwalk give shore anglers a way onto brackish water where speckled trout, redfish, flounder and black drum feed when the river runs salty, and catfish and mullet are always around. Fish live shrimp under a popping cork on a falling tide, or a mud minnow on the bottom for flounder in fall. The park also has RV and primitive campsites, a bathhouse, restrooms and miles of trails, which makes it a good base for a weekend. The city does not list fishing among the park's activities, so read the signs. Bring insect repellent, and watch for alligators.
