May Day Park sits at the end of College Avenue in Daphne, one of the city's most popular places on Mobile Bay, with a pier, a boat launch, a floating kayak launch, a playground, picnic tables and restrooms. The park opened in 1887 and was a festival ground for more than 60 years, and today it is a free, easy place to throw a line into the bay. From the pier, expect speckled trout, croaker, white trout and catfish through the warm months, redfish and flounder in fall, and the occasional summer jubilee, when flounder and crabs crowd the shallows before dawn. Fish live shrimp under a cork or on a bottom rig. The bay here is shallow and murky, and the wind matters more than the tide. Keep clear of boats at the launch.
