Helen Wood Park is a small City of Mobile park on Dauphin Island Parkway where Dog River meets Mobile Bay, and the city lists fishing among its amenities, along with its waterfront, a picnic pavilion and a kayak launch; a rebuilt boardwalk runs along the water. It is a quick stop for south Mobile anglers rather than a destination: cast from the boardwalk and shoreline for speckled trout, redfish and flounder when the water runs salty, and for croaker, white trout and catfish most of the year. Dog River is brackish, so the catch shifts with rain and river flow, and a dry fall is the best time to come. Live shrimp under a cork and small soft plastics catch most fish. Expect boat traffic from the marinas at the river mouth, and leave early when summer lightning builds over the bay.
