The Weeks Bay Reserve Fishing Pier sits on the Fish River where it opens into Weeks Bay, beside the reserve's Resource Center and just below the US 98 bridge. The reserve, run by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources as a National Estuarine Research Reserve, welcomes visitors to the center's outside decks, pavilions and fishing pier in daylight. The river's salinity swings from fresh to fairly salty with rain and the time of day, so the catch shifts: flounder, redfish and speckled trout when salt pushes up, bass and bream after heavy rain. Bull minnows on the bottom take flounder, while live shrimp under a cork, spinnerbaits and soft plastics take trout and reds. Expect boats from the state ramp next door, and leave when summer lightning builds.
