Opal Beach Fishing

Fee to fish: National seashore entrance fee, cashless payment only (checked Sep 27, 2026)

Opal Beach is the fee-area day-use complex in the Santa Rosa Area of Gulf Islands National Seashore, the undeveloped middle of Santa Rosa Island between Pensacola Beach and Navarre Beach. Its Gulf-side pavilion clusters sit behind a broad white beach where surf anglers look for pompano in spring and fall, Gulf whiting through the cooler months and bull redfish during the fall mullet run, while Spanish mackerel and bluefish harry bait schools in summer. Sand fleas or shrimp on a two-hook bottom rig in the first trough do most of the work. A gentle surf and clear green water count for more than the small, often once-a-day tide. The complex is open from 8 a.m. to sunset and charges a National Park entrance fee. Rip currents are common, and fishing is banned near the lifeguard towers while guards are on duty.
