Fishing in Lee County

Summary

Lee County takes in Southwest Florida's most famous inshore waters: Pine Island Sound, Matlacha Pass, San Carlos Bay, Estero Bay and the barrier islands of Gasparilla (Boca Grande), Captiva, Sanibel, Estero (Fort Myers Beach) and Bonita Beach. Anglers come for snook, redfish and trout in the sounds, the world-famous tarpon run at Boca Grande Pass from about May to July, winter sheepshead on every bridge, and pompano and Spanish mackerel in the passes. Hurricane Ian (2022) did enormous damage here and Helene and Milton (2024) followed; the Fort Myers Beach Pier and the Sanibel Lighthouse pier are still being rebuilt, but the Sanibel Causeway islands, Blind Pass, the Matlacha Bridge and Bowditch Point are open.

Seasons & Species

Season Likely species (shore) Notes
Spring (Mar–May) Spanish mackerel, pompano, snook, redfish, sheepshead Passes and causeway come alive as the water warms
Summer (Jun–Aug) Snook, tarpon, mangrove snapper, ladyfish, bonnethead Boca Grande tarpon season into July; snook on the beaches
Fall (Sep–Nov) Redfish, snook, trout, mackerel, pompano Excellent all-round fishing
Winter (Dec–Feb) Sheepshead, trout, black drum, pompano Bridges and causeways; snook sheltering in canals

Methods & Tackle

  • A 7-foot medium spinning rod with 15 lb braid and 20–40 lb fluorocarbon leader for most shore work.
  • Live whitebait, pinfish and shrimp on circle hooks for snook and redfish.
  • Fiddler crabs and knocker rigs for sheepshead.
  • Spoons and Gotchas for mackerel; pompano jigs for pompano.
  • Heavy leader, a bridge net and a plan to release fish in the water for bridge snook and tarpon.

Tides and Conditions

  • Tides are small and often mixed, but the passes (Boca Grande, Captiva, Blind, Matanzas) and bridges constrict them into strong current.
  • Fish the first hours of the outgoing tide at passes and bridges; slack water suits bottom fishing.
  • Light east winds bring clean water to the Gulf beaches; a west wind means fishing the sheltered bay sides.
  • Summer rain freshens the upper sounds and the Caloosahatchee, pushing fish seaward.
  • Red tide has hit Lee County badly in some years; check FWC's red tide status first.

Safety & Access

  • Lightning: summer afternoon storms build fast over the sounds.
  • Pass currents and boat traffic are serious at Blind Pass, Matanzas Pass and the causeway channels; do not wade the channels.
  • Bridge fishing puts you beside traffic; stay inside walkways.
  • Stingrays on the flats and beaches; shuffle your feet.
  • Several piers and facilities are still under hurricane repair; obey fences and check city and county notices.

Tips

  • Pay the Sanibel Causeway toll once and fish the causeway islands, Lighthouse Beach and Blind Pass in one day.
  • Fish the Matlacha Bridge at night on the outgoing tide for snook.
  • Winter sheepshead are on every bridge and rock pile from January to March.
  • Watch the passes for diving birds in spring and fall; that is where the mackerel are.
  • Boca Grande tarpon are best fished by boat; learn the pass's special gear rules from FWC before you go.
  • Arrive early at Sanibel lots; paid spaces fill fast in season.
  • Carry drinking water; many parks still have temporary facilities.

Nearby

  • Charlotte County – Charlotte Harbor, Punta Gorda and Stump Pass to the north.
  • Collier County – Naples, Wiggins Pass and Marco Island to the south.

FAQs

  • Do I need a fishing license?
    • A Florida saltwater fishing license is needed to fish from shore unless you are exempt or fishing from a pier that holds its own license for its visitors. Check exemptions and buy a license through FWC (myfwc.com).
  • Is the Fort Myers Beach Pier open?
    • No. Hurricane Ian destroyed it; a new, longer concrete pier has been contracted, with completion expected around summer 2027. Bowditch Point Park is the best open spot on the island meanwhile.
  • Can I fish the Sanibel Lighthouse pier?
    • Not yet. The beach is open but the pier is closed; funding for its rebuild was approved in 2026.
  • When is tarpon season at Boca Grande?
    • Roughly May through July, fished mainly from boats in Boca Grande Pass; check FWC's tarpon and pass gear rules before you fish.
  • Where can I fish at night?
    • The Matlacha Bridge is the classic night spot; many beach parks close at dusk.
